The Challenge

Vodafone Live! was the mobile internet before smartphones existed - a portal serving ringtones, games, news, and media to 30M+ daily users across 15+ European markets. The platform needed to handle massive traffic peaks, serve localized content per market, and maintain 99.9% uptime on infrastructure that predated modern cloud services.

Our Role

Served as Technical Lead, responsible for platform architecture and performance:

  • Architecture: Designed and maintained the J2EE application clusters on WebSphere, with Oracle backends handling content, user sessions, and billing integrations across all markets
  • Scale engineering: Optimized the platform to handle 30M+ daily users - caching strategies, database tuning, and traffic management that kept the platform stable during peak usage
  • Multi-market delivery: Coordinated content delivery and localization across 15+ European markets, each with its own content workflows and release schedules
  • Operations: Maintained 99.9% uptime SLA on a platform where downtime directly impacted Vodafone’s revenue

Results & Impact

Vodafone Live! was one of the most visited mobile platforms in Europe during its peak years. The architecture decisions and performance optimizations made during this period kept the platform running reliably at a scale that few mobile platforms had achieved at the time.
